With the continued drop in copper demand and copper prices plummeting, another mining company, Freeport-McMoRan, has announced that they will cut production and lay off about 10 percent of their U.S. workforce. This decrease in demand has been going on for at least two years. Add to this that the U.S. is only responsible for supplying about 7 percent of the copper for the world market.
Maybe the proposed Rosemont copper mine in the Santa Rita Mountains is dead on arrival. Time to start looking into new types of industry that can support new jobs and careers for the future of Southern Arizona.
