Patagonia Area Mines

While the proposed Rosemont mine is currently our main area of focus, we do keep and eye on other mining proposals in southern Arizona, and we will post information about other mine proposals on this page. However, for more detailed information and the most current info on mining in the Patagonia Mountains, please see our partner organization, Patagonia Area Resources Alliance’s website at www.patagoniaalliance.org.

Leaking Historic Patagonia Arizona Mines

Here is a video on the leaking underground mines in the Patagonia Mountain.  This video underscores the long-term environmental legacy of mining and consequences to future generations.

The Patagonia, Arizona area is presently the location of MULTIPLE mineral explorations from foreign mining companies with plans for underground mines on public lands, all within ten miles of our town center. Patagonia Area Resource Alliance is concerned about the impacts these mines and exploratory drilling projects will have on the water, wildlife, ecosystem, roads and air quality of the Patagonia region. PARA is also concerned about impacts to Patagonia’s recreation and tourism industry, which is a large, growing, and sustainable source of income for local businesses and economies.

Litigation Update

Oral arguments for our case before the 9th Circuit Appeals Court were held on February 1, 2021. Because of COVID, the oral arguments were virtual, and we could listen in. You can watch the recording here.

We cannot predict when we will hear a decision, but we expect to have to wait several months.
