Scientists spot jaguar as border wall, mining projects advance

Scientists at the University of Arizona’s Wild Cat Research and Conservation Center have recorded new sightings of a male jaguar this summer in the Sky Island Region of Southern Arizona. This news comes on the heels of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's 2024 decision to remove approximately 64,797 acres from the jaguar's critical habitat, in favor of Hudbay's Copper World mining complex. Hudbay claims that, "the lands in question are not, in any normal sense of the word, ‘essential’ to the survival of the jaguar species."
